Free Vintage-Inspired Bonnet Pattern…

Well, surely it’s time for another free pattern! Since having baby number 3, 11 weeks ago, I’ve been on a huge bonnet-making kick… so here’s my pattern for a simple vintage-inspired bonnet.

Please let me know if there are any errors. I quickly typed this out whilst trying to cook dinner and tend to baby’s needs. Multi-tasking at an all time high – let’s see how successful I was ha ha.

Hook: 5.5 mm (I/9).

Yarn: Worsted weight. I used Red Heart.

Size: Newborn to 6 week old – 36cm (14″) head circumference.

Gauge: 12 hdcs per 10cm (4″).

HAT INSTRUCTIONS:

Ch2 and work the following row into the 2nd ch from hook (or magic circle).

R1. ch2 (counts as first hdc here and throughout), then 9 hdc into 2nd ch from hook (or magic circle – depending on method you used).

R2. ch2, hdc in same stitch….then 2hdc in each stitch around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (20 hdc)

R3. ch2, hdc in same stitch, (hdc in next stitch, 2hdc in next stitch) repeat between brackets until end of round. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (30 hdc)

R4. ch2, hdc in same stitch, hdc in next 2 stitches, (2hdc in next st, hdc in next two sts) repeat between brackets until end of round. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (40 hdc)

R5. ch2, hdc across next 37 stitches (38 hdc)

R6. turn, ch2, hdc across next 37 stitches (38 hdc)

Repeat row 6 until work measures 8.5cm. I had 9 rows of 38 hdc total.

Then….

Turn, ch1, sc in same stitch, sc across remaining stitches working one decrease over forehead by single crocheting 2 together (37 sc)

SCALLOP EDGING

Turn, ch1, sc in same stitche, skip 2 stitches, 5 dc in next stitch, skip 2 stitches, 1 sc in next stitch, {skip 2 stitches, 5 dc in next stitch, skip 2 stitches, 1 sc in next stitch}. Repeat between { } across. 6 scallops made.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

TASSELS/TIES

Ribbon tie (make 2): cut a 50cm length of ribbon, double over and loop through one of the front corners of bonnet

Lace tie: cut a 85cm length of lace. Weave through the stitches of the hdc row closest to face edge, making sure to leave approx 25cm at the start and the finish to form the ties.

Free Strawberry Beanie Pattern…

So it’s been quite a while since I shared a free pattern. I’ve been so busy with orders and life in general.

We’re also expecting baby number 3 here at Hatting Madly Crochet. He or she is due mid-August, so I will have to start Hatting “Moderately” instead of “Madly” fairly soon and get started on making a baby blanket before I run out of time!

After baby is born, I’ll take a couple months off and then will start up again with monthly ready-to-ship sales only, working toward accepting a limited number of custom orders… depending on how the newest arrival settles in.

Anyhoooo…. this hat was actually a request from a customer for her baby girl, due next month. She requested a 3 month old size, in time for our New Zealand winter. Here goes….

Hooks: 5.5 mm (I/9): for body of hat; 4.5mm (7) for stem; 5mm (H/8) for leaves.

Yarn: DK/8ply (light worsted). I used Rosie’s Studio Family Knit. I crocheted holding two strands together to get a chunky effect.

Size: to fit 3 month old (40cm (15.5″) head circumference/14cm (5.5″) hat depth.

Gauge: 12st per 10cm (4″).

HAT INSTRUCTIONS:

(Yarn held double)

Ch2 and work the following row into the 2nd ch from hook (or magic circle).

R1. 10 hdc into 2nd ch from hook (or magic circle – depending on method you used).

R2. ch2 (counts as hdc throughout pattern), hdc in same stitch….then 2hdc in each stitch around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (20 hdc)

R3. ch2, hdc in same stitch, (hdc in next stitch, 2hdc in next stitch) repeat between brackets until end of round. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (30 hdc)

R4. ch2, hdc in same stitch, hdc in next 2 stitches, (2hdc in next st, hdc in next two sts) repeat between brackets until end of round. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (40 hdc)

R5. ch2, hdc in same stitch, hdc in next 7 stitches, (2hdc in next st, hdc in next seven sts) repeat between brackets until end of round. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (45 hdc)

Work even on 45 hdc until hat depth is 14cm (5.5″).

Fasten off and weave in ends.

STEM INSTRUCTIONS:

(Yarn held double)

ch 10
Sl st in 3rd ch from hook, and every ch across (8 sl st). Sew onto top of hat. Weave in ends.

LEAF INSTRUCTIONS

(Yarn held double – make 5 leaves)

ch 10
Work 1dc in 3rd ch from hk and next 2 ch, 1 hdc in next 2 ch, 1 sc in next 2 ch, 2 sl st in last ch.

Work on opposite side of foundation ch….
1 sc in first ch, 1 hdc in next 2 ch, 1 dc in next 2 ch, 3 dc in next ch, sl st to ch in foundation ch.

Sew 5 leaves on top of hat. You might have to slightly overlap them. I didn’t sew the tips down as I think the leaves look more like the real deal when they curl up… but it’s up to you. Weave in all ends.

OPTIONAL SEEDS:

Embroider black seeds with one strand of black DK/8py (light worsted) yarn in the shape of an upside down “V”.

Free Toddler Princess Crown Pattern…

I just had to share this pattern I improvised today. I have the flu at the moment, so if my instructions are unclear, I cannot be held accountable 😉

Hook: 3.5 mm (E/4)

Yarn: DK/8ply. I used Knitwise Pricewise Hero, from The Warehouse.

Size: to fit toddler/small child with head circumference 50cm (20″) approx – my daughter is 3 and a half.

INSTRUCTIONS:

ch 84, join with sl st making sure you don’t twist the chain.

R1. ch1, sc in same st, sc around, join with sl st

R2. ch1, sc in same st, sc around, join with sl st

R3. v-stitch (hdc, ch2, hdc) in joining st and every 3rd st around, join [the first v-stitch will be ch4, hdc]

R4. OPTION ONE… Shell (3dc, ch2, sl st in 1st ch, 3dc) in first v-stitch, sc in next v-stitch, repeat around, join [the first shell will be ch4, sl st in 3rd ch, 3dc] OR OPTION TWO… Shell 6dc in first v-stitch, sc in next v-stitch, repeat around, join [the first shell will be ch2, 5dc].

R5. If you did the 2nd option in R4, then ch1, sc in same st, sc around (in the tops of stitches of each shell) and sl st into the sc’s of the previous row. If you chose the first option in R4, then omit this row.

Join. Fasten off.

If you would like to make the 3 middle crown points stand out from the rest, then work as follows:

Centre point – 6dc in v-stitch, sl st into sc, ch1, turn, sc back over top of shell, sl st in sc, ch1, turn, sc in first 3 sts, picot (ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch, ch1), sc in final 3 sts, sl st in sc. You can modify this in so many different ways. The idea is to make this crown point the largest one so you can tell where the front of the crown is.

Work the larger centre point picot (ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch, ch1) in the middle of the shells of the 2 points to the left and right of the centre point.

Free Ruffled Brim Sunhat Pattern…

I get frustrated when I see patterns that are offered for free with the stipulation that you may not sell items made from it. *Sigh….* – that’s just me. No offense intended. Well, you  may rest-assured that the patterns I post on my blog are free, no strings attached.  As long as you don’t copy and sell the pattern as you’re own, then you are free to do what you will with them. If you feel inclined to give me credit for the pattern, go right ahead – if not…. no skin off my nose 🙂 Anyhoooo…..

Here’s one of my designs, that may or may not need a little fine-tuning once I’ve had an opportunity to test it using cotton. Enjoy!

Hook: 4 mm (G)

Yarn: Worsted weight. I used Redheart to test the pattern – but in future I will be using cotton as it is breathable and cool to wear.

Gauge: 64dc stitches = 50cm (20″) approx. So I guess the gauge is around 12st per 10cm (4″)?

Hat circumference: 50cm (20″) approx – to fit a toddler/small child – my daughter is 3 and a half.

Hat height (body of hat – brim not included) 17cm (6.5″)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Magic circle (or ch2 and work the following row into the 2nd ch from hook)

R1. 12dc into ring (or 2nd ch from hook – depending on what method you used) (12 dc)

R2. ch3 (counts as dc from here forward), dc in same stitch…. then 2dc in each stitch around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (24 dc)

R3. ch3, dc in same stitch, dc in next dc, (2dc in next dc, dc in next dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (36dc)

R4. ch3, dc in same stitch, dc in next 2 stitches, (2dc in next dc, dc in next two dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (48 dc)

R5. ch3, dc in same stitch, dc in next 3 stitches, (2dc in next dc, dc in next three dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (60dc)

R6. ch3, dc in same stitch, dc in next 14 stitches, (2dc in next dc, dc in next fourteen dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain (64dc)

R7. to 10. DC in each st around – joining with sl st at end of each row (64st)

BAND:

R11. to 13. ch3, (dc in prev st, skip st, dc) repeat around… there will be one dc in every st – join with sl st at beginning of row (64sts)

BRIM:

(You can join with sl st at end of each row – or alternatively crochet in the round, marking your beginning st to keep track of your stitch count)

R14. (2dc, dc in next 2 sts) around

R15. (2dc, dc in next 3 sts) around

R16. (2dc, dc in next 4sts) around

R17. (2dc, dc in next 5sts) around

R18. Reverse slip stitch in each st around. (I find the reverse slip stitch gives the brim a nice firm edge. If you are unfamiliar with this stitch, just slip stitch around).

Fasten in ends etc etc…

Free Sunflower Pattern…

Spring has sprung here in New Zealand, and so I have been inspired to make crocheted flower headbands in bright, cheerful colours. Here’s the pattern for my sunflower which I attach to a brooch pin. That way, it can be attached to a headband or worn as a brooch.

Hook: 4 mm (G)

Yarn: DK/8ply. I used Panda Magnum (gold) and Crucci Olympus (dark brown).

FIRST LAYER:

Using yellow yarn…

Magic Circle

R1: Work 8sc in magic circle, join with sl st.

R2: 2sc in each st around, join with sl st (16 sts).

R3: (petals) ch 6, working stitches in the chain just made, sc in next ch from hook, then 1hdc in next ch, 2dc in next ch, 1 hdc in next ch, 1sc in next ch, sl st in the next st of centre. Repeat R3 x 16 times (16 petals).

SECOND LAYER (FLOWER CENTRE)

Using brown yarn…

Magic Circle

R1: Work 8sc in magic circle, join with sl st.R2: 2sc in each st around, join with sl st (16 sts).

R2: 2sc in each st around, join with sl st (16 sts).

R3: 2 sc in each st around, join with sl st (32 sts).

Sew flower centre onto the first layer of flower. Weave in ends etc and you’re done. Enjoy!

Free Penguin Beanie Pattern…

Recently I had a request from a customer (on my Hatting Madly Crochet Facebook page) to replicate a knitted penguin beanie (that her 22 month old daughter had lost. So I began hatting madly, and this is the crocheted version that I came up with.

This is a pattern is for a petite 22 month old girl. She has a head circumference measurement of 18 inches (46cm), hat height 7 inches (18cm). In saying that, this hat fits my 13 month old son – head circumference: 19 inches (48cm).

Hook: 4 mm for body of hat … or whatever hook achieves required hat circumference. 4.5mm for ribbing, eyes and beak, 5mm hook for eyes.

Yarn: DK/8ply. I used Sullivans Soft Touch acrylic. It seems a bit heavier than most DK/8ply yarns – it’s probably more a worsted weight. I normally used 2 strands of 8ply held together in place of a super bulky weight yarn, but with this particular yarn, and also because I was working ribbing which crochets up quite thick, I chose to use one strand.

Gauge: 10 dc stitches = 6.9cm (sorry I didn’t pay attention to the height)

Hat circumference: 17.5 inches (45cm)

Hat height: 7 inches (18cm)

BODY OF HAT

Ch2

R1. In 2nd chain from hook 10 sc. Join with sl st in first sc.

R2. ch3 (counts as dc from here forward), dc in same stitch, then 2dc in each stitch around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (20 dc)

R3. ch3, dc in same stitch, (2dc in next dc, dc in next dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (30dc)

R4. ch3, dc in same stitch, dc in next 2 stitches, (2dc in next dc, dc in next two dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (40dc)

R5. ch3, dc in same stitch, dc in next 3 stitches, (2dc in next dc, dc in next three dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (50dc)

R6. ch3, increase evenly seven times by crocheting twice  in same stitch until you have total of 64 dcs (64dc)

R7 – R15. ch3, then dc in each dc around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (64dc)

R16 – 19. ch3, (FPDC, BPDC) around. Join with sl st in first FPDC (not the top of the chain). The chain 3 should fall slightly to the back.

Fasten off.

EYES

Using 4.5mm hook and one strand of black…. ch2 (join with sl st at end of each round).

R1. In 2nd ch from hook, 5 x sc (5 sts)

R2. Using 5mm hook and 2 strands of white (so that the eyeballs are rigid and stand up off the hat) ch1, sc x2 in each stitch around (10 sts)

R3. Ch1, (2sc, 1sc) around (15 sts)

R4. Ch1, sl stitch around, but do 2 sl st decreases (same concept as sc2tog) evenly in the round to make eyeballs stand up (13 sts)

Join and fasten off.

BEAK

Using 4.5mm hook and one strand orange yarn ch2

R1. 6sc in 2nd ch from hook – don’t join. Use st marker to indicate beginning of each round here and throughout. (6 sts)

R2. 2sc in each st around (12 sts)

R3. (2sc, sc) around (18 sts)

R4. (2sc, sc, sc) around (24 sts)

R5. (2sc, sc, sc, sc) around (sorry didn’t do stitch count – not really that important)

Fasten off.

I used the wrong side as the “right side” coz I thought the texture looked better.

Fold beak in half and stitch the straight edge to the body of the hat, just above the ribbing. You can stuff it and sew it completely shut if you wish, or you can sew it to the hat so that the beak stays open, but not entirely open. I kinda stitched it half shut – if that makes sense?

Sew eyes either side of the beak, just above ribbing.

Hope that’s not overly confusing 😉

Free Ribbed Brim Beanie Pattern…

This is a pattern I made up for my 3 year old daughter. She has a head circumference measurement of 20 inches (50.8cm).

Hook: 5.5mm (I) … or whatever hook achieves required hat circumference

Yarn: bulky weight or 2 strands of a light 8ply/DK held together. I used Patons Big Baby 8ply

Hat circumference: 20 inches (50.8cm)

Hat height: 7.5 inches (19cm)

Ch2

R1. In 2nd chain from hook 10 sc. Join with sl st in first sc.

R2. ch3 (counts as dc from here forward), dc in same stitch, then 2dc in each stitch around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (20 dc)

R3. ch3, dc in same stitch, (2dc in next dc, dc in next dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (30dc)

R4. ch3, dc in same stitch, (2dc in next dc, dc in next two dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (40dc)

R5. ch3, dc in same stitch, (2dc in next dc, dc in next three dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (50dc)

R6. ch3, dc in same stitch, (2dc in next dc, dc in next four dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (60dc)

R7 – R13. ch3, then dc in each dc around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (60dc)

Work ribbing….

R14 – R18. ch3, (fpdc in first 2 stitches, bpdc in next 2 stitches) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st in first fpdc – not the top of the ch3. Ch3 will sit slightly behind first fpdc.

Fasten off and weave in all the tails.

Two layered flower…

Front flower is worked first (light purple):

ch5 join with sl st

R1. ch1, 10 sc in foundation ring, sl st in first sc to join (10sc)

R2. Working in front of sc stitches…(sc, ch2, 2dc, ch2, sc) in first sc, then skip next sc… repeat between brackets in every 2nd sc around. Join with sl st in first sc

R3. In unused back loop of sc below… (sc, ch4) repeat around = 5 ch4 loops. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off. Change colour (dark purple).

R4. (sc, hdc, dc, 3 treble, dc, hdc, sc) in all 5 ch4 loops. Sl st in first sc to join. Fasten off, weave in ends, and attach to hat.

Free Sunbursts in the Snow Baby Blanket or Throw Pattern…

Row 2: Attach with sl st between any tc, ch3, [puff stitch, ch1] between each treble crochet……….16 [puff stitch, ch1] total.

sl st to join. Fasten off.

COLOUR C:

Row 3: Attach with sl st in any ch1 space, ch3, [4dc bobble stitch, ch2] in each ch1 space……16 [bobble, ch2] total.

Sl st to join. Fasten off.

WHITE YARN:
