I just had to share this pattern I improvised today. I have the flu at the moment, so if my instructions are unclear, I cannot be held accountable π
Hook: 3.5 mm (E/4)
Yarn: DK/8ply. I used Knitwise Pricewise Hero, from The Warehouse.
Size: to fit toddler/small child with head circumference 50cm (20β³) approx β my daughter is 3 and a half.
INSTRUCTIONS:
ch 84, join with sl st making sure you don’t twist the chain.
R1. ch1, sc in same st, sc around, join with sl st
R2. ch1, sc in same st, sc around, join with sl st
R3. v-stitch (hdc, ch2, hdc) in joining st and every 3rd st around, join [the first v-stitch will be ch4, hdc]
R4. OPTION ONE… Shell (3dc, ch2, sl st in 1st ch, 3dc) in first v-stitch, sc in next v-stitch, repeat around, join [the first shell will be ch4, sl st in 3rd ch, 3dc] OR OPTION TWO… Shell 6dc in first v-stitch, sc in next v-stitch, repeat around, join [the first shell will be ch2, 5dc].
R5. If you did the 2nd option in R4, then ch1, sc in same st, sc around (in the tops of stitches of each shell) and sl st into the scβs of the previous row. If you chose the first option in R4, then omit this row.
Join. Fasten off.
If you would like to make the 3 middle crown points stand out from the rest, then work as follows:
Centre point – 6dc in v-stitch, sl st into sc, ch1, turn, sc back over top of shell, sl st in sc, ch1, turn, sc in first 3 sts, picot (ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch, ch1), sc in final 3 sts, sl st in sc. You can modify this in so many different ways. The idea is to make this crown point the largest one so you can tell where the front of the crown is.
Work the larger centre point picot (ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch, ch1) in the middle of the shells of the 2 points to the left and right of the centre point.
Enjoy!
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern, I have made two today, and my daughters were over the moon. I am so impressed that you managed to do this whilst feeling so ill, I do hope you have recovered now π
You’re very welcome. I’m amazed I haven’t had anyone tell me that the pattern doesn’t make any sense π I’m glad to share a pattern here and there. I figure I’ve been on the receiving end of so many great patterns on Ravelry that it’s only fair I pay it forward.
I love it – thank you for sharing your pattern. π My daughter decided on a Princess party for her 4th birthday and I was searching for a crown pattern to make for all her little friends! Just perfect. Your designs are so creative, if only shipping to the US wasn’t so expensive. I will share a photo after the party. I’ll also be making some for future sessions with clients.
See, this is why I like writing the occasional free pattern when time permits π I’m so glad there are so many little princesses out there enjoying their crocheted crowns. The shipping is ridiculous to the States from NZ – not to mention how long it takes, which is anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks! I don’t know about you, but when I order something, I want it “yesterday” ha ha. Thanks so much for the great feedback. And I would love to see a photo when you can manage it.
Ok I must be a dork but I’m having trouble with the very end, where I’m making the middle point taller. Help!
What part is giving you grief Anisa? Quite frankly, I’m really surprised people have understood these instructions at all lol. Basically you can wing it, just do whatever looks right. There’s so many ways to achieve the same look or something a little different. Trial and error seems to be the best approach for me π
Ok the pattern seems pretty simple to follow but I do have a question. I am unsure what yarn you used. I’m using typical worsted weight yarn but a 3.5mm needle is way too small. My fear is that if I use a 5mm needle the whole size of the crown will be too large. Any suggestions?
Hi there – I used what we call 8 ply or double knit over here in New Zealand. Ravelry says that basically equates to a light worsted yarn US terms – but use whatever you have and just adjust the hook to suit, and obviously adjust the foundation chain to fit the child’s head. Multiples of 6 works, from memory π Hope that helps.
Help! Followed your directions exactly and my crown is waving and curly! I’m a newbie crocheter what could I have done wrong?
Hi Michelle – I don’t know what is going on with the waviness that you’re describing. Perhaps tension issues, or maybe a misinterpretation of my instructions? Do you know anyone else that crochets that you could show your work to? Sorry I can’t be of more help.
Michelle, perhaps you put a crown point (either the 6 dcd or the shell in each v-stitch) in every space around instead of in each ‘v’…this makes for too much of an increase and would result in a wavy/curly crown.
Thank you for this pattern! It is so cute and adorable.
Thanks very much for this pattern…it’s priceless. I’m having a problem with the wording I think, on round 3. The end says that the beginning v-stitch will be ch4, hdc….does that mean I start the row off with that? or does it mean that I should do that for the last repeat of the round? Thanks so much π
Hi Debbie – glad you’re enjoying the pattern. You ch4, hdc at the beginnning of the 3rd row only – that will make your very first v-stitch, then you (hdc, ch2 hdc) for all the other v-stitches around. The ch4 basically equates to the first hdc and ch2 of a regular v-stitch. Does that make sense?
I just love this pattern. It is easy to follow and quick to crochet up. I made it last night… with a few changes, but it turned out just beautiful. Thank You for the pattern. My Daughter teaches Special Ed so I have made some “boy” and “girl” crowns for her to give her students as a reward.
Thank you for allowing us to enjoy your beautiful work.
What a great idea Judy. So glad you’ve been able to put my pattern to such great use x
Oh I cannot wait to try this. I made up a pattern this past weekend while we watched a family movie (that is how addicted I am to crochet- can’t even relax without it). However, my crown came up a bit unsturdy. The ones in your pics look so stiff. I must try them. Did you starch or is it that my super soft baby yarn is too weak?
Gabli from http://gablimusing.blogspot.com
Hi Gabli – I know the feeling. I don’t often sit down unless I have a crocet hook in my hand π I didn’t use starch. I think I have a fairly tight tension, and the yarn I used was New Zealand DK or 8 ply acrylic, which equates to a light worsted weight yarn. The crowns I made weren’t overly stiff. Cotton would produce a stiffer result most likely. I’ve never used starch on my crochet before, but I think that would be a great idea with the crowns, depending on how you want them to sit on the head. If you want them to “perch” on top of the head, then starch would a good idea, but if you want them to be worn as a headband more or less , then I guess it doesn’t matter if the crown is a bit flimsy. I’ve completely rambled π Hopefully some of that is helpful ha ha.
Thank you- this helps! I am off to look in my yarn piles to see if I have acrylic fibers:)
Hi mary from ireland here just printed your pattern it looks lovely cant wait make it thank you mary
Reblogged this on HΓ€kelmonster and commented:
I guess, I just have to try one of those. Not for J though as he might not approve …
adorable- I am on my way to my hooks as we speak!
Hello! I was searching for a little something for a baby girl and this looked so sweet. It looked intricate (I’m a beginner) but your instructions were clear and I managed it on the first go! I made it in newborn size and it worked out perfectly. Thanks so much for sharing!
Awww, thanks so much. So glad yours worked out for ya π
Thank you for sharing this pattern. I found it through Ravelry. My daughter is invited to a princess party this afternoon and it was fun to make these crowns, one for her and one for each of the birthday girls!
What a great idea! I’m so glad you put the pattern to good use π
To make the 3 center points pop out, do you do this in round 4 or after you have crocheted the whole thing?
You do this after round 4.
Thank you for this adorable pattern! I work at a preschool and yesterday was “dress like a super hero or a princess” day for the kids, so I made a crochet crown for myself to wear π The kids loved it!! I’m also having our first baby in 19 weeks so I’m making a little one for her, too. Love it!!
That’s so cool! Thanks for the great feedback π

Thank you so much for posting this pattern! My daughter has been going on about wanting a crown with points all the way round, but what with her being 3, I was loath to make a cardboard one that she would become really attatched to and then it’d break after a day!
I’ve made her this crown in several different colour combos and she’s loving dressing up with them so much!
Really great pattern. Thanks π
Thanks so much for the great feedback. And yes, I agee – yarn tiaras last much longer than cardboard π

do you mind if I use the finished product for resale. I will give you full credit for the pattern if I were to sell any.
No problem π
Where you do 6dc around mine look more like rounded scallops than crown points. This is after I sc around. Perhaps I’m sc in to many stitches? Did you sc in the sc from the previous round then sc in each st from the 6dc’s? Mine just doesn’t look as triangular as yours. Or perhaps you picture at the top was not using the 6dc option, perhaps it was using the shells in the v-stiches option. Maybe I’ll try that tomorrow and see if it looks better. I haven’t tried the 3 bigger points yet, but perhaps when I do I’ll get an idea of what to do to my other points. I just can’t figure out what I did wrong…
