I get frustrated when I see patterns that are offered for free with the stipulation that you may not sell items made from it. *Sigh….* – that’s just me. No offense intended. Well, you may rest-assured that the patterns I post on my blog are free, no strings attached. As long as you don’t copy and sell the pattern as you’re own, then you are free to do what you will with them. If you feel inclined to give me credit for the pattern, go right ahead – if not…. no skin off my nose 🙂 Anyhoooo…..
Here’s one of my designs, that may or may not need a little fine-tuning once I’ve had an opportunity to test it using cotton. Enjoy!
Hook: 4 mm (G)
Yarn: Worsted weight. I used Redheart to test the pattern – but in future I will be using cotton as it is breathable and cool to wear.
Gauge: 64dc stitches = 50cm (20″) approx. So I guess the gauge is around 12st per 10cm (4″)?
Hat circumference: 50cm (20″) approx – to fit a toddler/small child – my daughter is 3 and a half.
Hat height (body of hat – brim not included) 17cm (6.5″)
INSTRUCTIONS:
Magic circle (or ch2 and work the following row into the 2nd ch from hook)
R1. 12dc into ring (or 2nd ch from hook – depending on what method you used) (12 dc)
R2. ch3 (counts as dc from here forward), dc in same stitch…. then 2dc in each stitch around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (24 dc)
R3. ch3, dc in same stitch, dc in next dc, (2dc in next dc, dc in next dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (36dc)
R4. ch3, dc in same stitch, dc in next 2 stitches, (2dc in next dc, dc in next two dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (48 dc)
R5. ch3, dc in same stitch, dc in next 3 stitches, (2dc in next dc, dc in next three dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (60dc)
R6. ch3, dc in same stitch, dc in next 14 stitches, (2dc in next dc, dc in next fourteen dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain (64dc)
R7. to 10. DC in each st around – joining with sl st at end of each row (64st)
BAND:
R11. to 13. ch3, (dc in prev st, skip st, dc) repeat around… there will be one dc in every st – join with sl st at beginning of row (64sts)
BRIM:
(You can join with sl st at end of each row – or alternatively crochet in the round, marking your beginning st to keep track of your stitch count)
R14. (2dc, dc in next 2 sts) around
R15. (2dc, dc in next 3 sts) around
R16. (2dc, dc in next 4sts) around
R17. (2dc, dc in next 5sts) around
R18. Reverse slip stitch in each st around. (I find the reverse slip stitch gives the brim a nice firm edge. If you are unfamiliar with this stitch, just slip stitch around).
Fasten in ends etc etc…

Hatting Madly Crochet 
Just made 2 of these for a birthday/baby shower and I LOVE them! I wanted to make some flowers to pin on that would be interchangeable. A sunflower and maybe something red. Do you have free patterns for all of your super cute flowers?

I don’t have any of my own flower patterns written out (except for the sunflower and daffodil patterns here) – I kinda just wing it or google or look on ravelry for free flower patterns or borrow flower patterns from hat patterns I’ve purchased previously. Pinterest would also be worth looking at for free flower patterns. Hope that helps 🙂
LOVE this pattern! I have to admit that I altered it a little because the hats will be used by my twin nieces during a trip to the Caribbean and I wanted them to be very light and “airy”.

Hi Suzanne – sorry I didn’t record the amount of yarn I used. This hat was made with Red Heart acrylic yarn, but I made another of these hats out of cotton and used approx 213 yards for that one. Hope that helps.

YouTube is your friend when you’re learning to crochet 🙂 This stitch is call Double Crochet Cross Stitch. I remember I always had a bit of trouble with that – and I haven’t made this hat in such a long time. I hope that’s a little bit helpful 🙂 Good luck!

There’s very little difference between a 3 and 4 year old. The white hat in the picture was made for my 3 year old – it still fits her now and she’s 5 years old. So you might not have to alter at all – or maybe try a half size larger hook if you think it looks too small.
I made several sunflowers for pins and headbands! They are adorable and very easy to follow! I made the sunhat and had to alter your pattern for size a little but with the brim I look at your pictures and it seems you did more rows than what you say in the pattern. Did you do the first row 2 dc and 1 dc in next 1 around, then row 2 was dc in next 2 around and so on until it’s 2 dc, dc in next 5? I’ve been trying to experiment a little because my granddaughters are 2 and 1 and don’t want the brim to hang in their face. I like the wavy and stiffness to it that yours seem to have. I thought maybe you altered your pattern a little.
The white sunhat is made with Red Heart worsted and the brims sit so nice with that particular yarn. Cotton seems to have more drape. When I made cotton ones I used a smaller crochet hook and I did alter the pattern, but it was very much trial and error – crochet a few rows, decide it wasn’t right, rip it out, and try a different amount of stitches. Sorry I didn’t record what I did for cotton.
On round 3 I’m not getting 36 dc but in round 2 I’m getting 24 so the mistake isn’t there and no matter what I do I either get 35 or 37 so can you tell me what my mistake is
My mistake Kayla – basically it wouldn’t matter if you fudged it in order to get the total of 36dcs required… but it should say:
R3. ch3, dc in same stitch. DC in next dc. (2dc in next dc, dc in next dc) repeat between brackets around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (36dc)

Wanting to make this hat with cotton. What do you recommend for any changes? I know you said you made the brim differently, but that you didn’t record it. I have 10 days (not normally needed) to make a sunhat and I love the way yours looks. 🙂
Hi Lexi – sorry for my late reply. I’ve been very busy with my 3 littlies. I believe I used village craft cotton for my daughters hat, and honestly, I crocheted and unraveled, and crocheted and unraveled the brim over and over again to try to get it to ruffle properly. I know I used a 3.5mm hook for the body of the hat and then switched to 2.75mm hook for the brim. I’m looking at my very messy scribbled notes and it says I worked 16 rows before starting the brim. The notes I have on the brim was as follows – hope you can understand them: Row 17/ (2dc, then 1dc in next 3 sts) repeat around. Row 18/ (2dc, then 1 dec in next 3 sts) repeat around. Row 19/ (2dc, then 1 dc in next 4sts) repeat around. Row 20/ 2dc, then 1dc in next 5sts) repeat around. Row 21/ Dc around. Row 22/ Dc around.

Hi! I’m love the pic you have posted and am about to make it tomorrow for my daughter. I bought cotton yarn to make it with and read your above changes to the pattern when you switched to cotton. Just wondering if your cotton attempt turned out the way the original pic did, specifically with the wavy edge. I also have red heart in white so I’m debating which to use, though I liked the idea of the cotton for the warmer weather. Thanks for your help and thank you for posting the pattern! 🙂
I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your patterns in this manner – I agree with your sentiment on not being able to sell items made from patterns – it makes me even more frustrated when it’s one you’ve paid for and are not advised of that clause in advance! This hat looks super cute so it is now my next project – as soon as I can decide which yarn to make it with. Time to go stash diving I think!

Just finished making one of these for my granddaughter using Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton. I used a size F hook, and didn’t even use up one full skein. I haven’t tried it on her yet, but I think it will be okay by the time summer comes around here in the great white north! She will be a year old in August. Cute, cute, cute!!!

Hi! LOVE this pattern…just whipped up my first hat today. A question though? I’m holding off finishing, as I am not sure I have ever heard to the reverse slip stitch. I have in knitting, and obviously the crochet “reverse single stitch.” Maybe you or one of the commentors can help? Hi there. It’s been so long since I worked up this pattern, but I’m thinking maybe I slip stitched from left to right across my work, in much the same way you would do for reverse single crochet/crab stitch. I think it just made the edge a bit stiffer? Hope that helps 🙂
